NDTG Launches 2025 Domestic Asbestos Awareness Campaign
The National Demolition Training Group (NDTG) is proud to launch its 2025 Domestic Asbestos Awareness Campaign. A powerful initiative dedicated to educating the public about a hidden but very real risk that could be present in millions of UK homes: asbestos.
Despite being banned in the UK 25 years ago, asbestos is still responsible for approximately 5,000 deaths in Great Britain each year. Asbestos-related diseases typically take decades for symptoms to occur following exposure.
Timed to follow Global Asbestos Awareness Week, the campaign aims to spark national conversation and provide life-saving knowledge to those most at risk: small business owners, ordinary homeowners and DIY enthusiasts who may unknowingly disturb asbestos during renovations or maintenance works.
Is Asbestos Hiding in Your Home?
If your home or retail space was built before 1999, there’s a significant chance that it contains asbestos in some form, from textured ceiling coatings and floor tiles to insulation boards, boiler flues, and garage roofs.
Disturbing these materials through drilling, sanding, or demolition can release dangerous asbestos fibres into the air, and inhalation of these fibres can lead to fatal diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a particularly aggressive and incurable cancer.
Yet most homeowners remain unaware of these risks.
This campaign exists to change that.

The course covers:
- Legislation – what the law says about asbestos in homes
- What is Asbestos? – types, identification, and common uses
- Effects on Health – how exposure impacts the human body
- History of Use – why asbestos was used and how its risks became known
- Likely Locations – where you might find it in your home
- What to Do if Things Go Wrong – how to respond safely and legally

Why This Campaign Matters
Asbestos is often viewed as a workplace hazard, but millions of people are exposed in their homes or retail spaces, sometimes with devastating consequences. This campaign shifts the spotlight onto the domestic dangers of asbestos, helping people make safer decisions before they knock down a wall, drill into a ceiling, or rip up old flooring.
We’re also working to make noise in the right places, ensuring our message reaches beyond industry circles and into local communities.
Working Together for Greater Impact
NDTG is proud to collaborate with:
- Health and Safety Executive (HSE) – bringing regulatory insight and expertise.
- UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) – supporting course certification for the industry and awareness.
- Mesothelioma UK – our charity partner, offering care and support to victims of asbestos exposure
- The National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) – proud campaign supporter and promoter within the wider demolition and construction network
- Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) – an affiliated partner, working with us through the Asbestos Management Institute (AMI) to improve asbestos education, awareness, and management practices across the UK
